May 23, 2003 After the Layoffs By CHRISTOPHER GREEDER At first I watched from a safe distance Dull scissors, staplers, chairs, even the pens And paper clips were going. Some had big fistfuls of postits, and the telephones With caller ID went first. We joked and called this "The Looting". At first I thought how lucky we were to still have a job. We were not the refuges sent out into the dark hurricane. And then I really thought and I knew how lucky we were to still at least have arms and legs to loot with. How horrible it would have been To see people with akward mouthfuls Of paperclips, and people pushing chairs Out with their heads. And people running around with files stuffed into their untreated wounds. And then, from the 5th floor, we spied Their sad parade out of the building. One turned, flipped the finger and then slipped on an oil slick in the parking lot. Crashing down in pain he went. Crashing down in pain. And no sooner had the conversation inside Turned back to basketball, and American Idol. No sooner had the people adjusted to the feel of a new ruler in their hand.
