Plain Crazy
By JOHN HOLT
out where it's empty
the wind howls
rain is an uncommon friend
there are some strange people
blown away
by the electric hum of nothing
running small stores
growing weeds in the dust
real drunk
linked together
by the white light express
that ties all of us
in a twisted knot
mountains blast out of nowhere
screaming in the sky
mean grizzlies wander fearless
disrupting the current
with their curious buzz
snow and ice sweep down
cattle freeze
minds vanish
the beating is constant
hard to disguise within the beauty
the trick of this
skip off to oblivion
enjoy the view
none better anywhere
John Holt has been called the Hunter Thompson
of Montana. He is the author of numerous books, including the
gripping novel Hunted,
and Coyote
Nowhere: In Search of America's Lost Frontier. He lives in

Question
By MICKEY Z
Who named
"Popeye's Fried Chicken"?
How did the world's
most celebrated spinach eater,
a chivalrous and muscular vegetarian
become associated with
the charred flesh of tortured
and cancerous birds
pumped full of hormones
and antibiotics
and mass-marketed
to the underprivileged?
Mickey Z. can be reached at mzx2@earthlink.net.
Earthmen Are Hard
By STEW ALBERT
It was supposed to be a humble
foreign policy
but that was before
Dubya invaded Iraq and decided to conquer Mars
his favorite god of war.
Look for images of Bush in
a space suite
striding the red planet of rocks
simulated like his Christmas turkey
they feature Dubya
battling space monsters
finding a treasure so great
it finances our entire deficit
with a few bucks left over for handcuffs.
Perhaps Presidential advisors
will permit Arnold as sidekick
groping Martian babes
while Dubya chops off their heads.
In a world of such magnificent
entertainment
what patriot
will worry about unemployment and body bags?
Stew Albert runs the Yippie
Reading Room. His memoir, Who
the Hell is Stew Albert?, is now available at independent
bookstores or from Red Hen Press. For a personally autographed copy,
please send a check or money order for $22 (includes s&h)
to Stew Albert, Who The Hell. PO Box 13161, Portland OR 97213-0161.

Weighty Abstractions
By HAMMOND GUTHRIE
First reports indicating blister
weapons
followed by testing of benign heavy metal
yet the first indication unusually counts
leaving behind the false impression
that weapons of mass destruction
are being found and duly destroyed
Domestic policies anxiously
wait in lines
of color coded paranoia without assurances
behind this regime's terrorist explanation
Mars and the moon are but diversions
for another species of terrorist act
while Cpl. suicide remains on the rise
Draft immigrants to be sent
overseas
like oxen dressed and quartered
in the uniform of the day - yesterday
protests securely booing and chanting
across and beyond a slain hero's tombstone
bemoaning the 2004 American nightmare
Republican masquerading Democrat's
white collar pretending to be a black tie
within an unsociable caucus of self-interest.
When will someone else have something to say,
something worth remembering more than once
or to have a dream worth remembering at all?
Life on scorched planet earth is fast
becoming an inconvenient expense
converting the color of money
structuring long-term commitments
of deceptive war mongering complexity
only to militarize the global horizon
Weighty abstractions of the
moment
booing, begging and screaming
to be removed from office.

Memoirs of a Beat Survivor. He is the editor of the great
online journal The
