For Gaza
BY RICHARD FLEMING
the floodlights shine
on your predicament now
they've kissed you all off
with a machiavellian vow
we awaken to find
that the devils you know
are as real as the air
and you've nowhere to go
bloodied and brilliant
gaspin' for breath
life should be more
than the absence of death
RICHARD FLEMING lives in Fort Myers, Florida and can be reached at dic4rock@yahoo.com
the hours linear eye negates the rain the memoried snow fields
BY LANCE HENSON
the hours linear eye negates the rain the memoried snow fields
while the world watches us
in raindrops hanging from the iron railing on the balcony
amidst the calling bells
there appear stones folded out of our longing
here in midwinter snow like soft petals open to sunlight
on the far hills
among the fallen winter branches
among the worn songs of the dying
it is gaza four days after christmas and already the breath
of dead children drift like ripped paper
upon the hanging hours
mingling with the breath of the stilled ones
on the nebraska plains at wounded knee
there are passings by the window
in a gathering mist there are also the ones
whose nothing is all they have
a nothingness from which they gauge the world
following this long traverse into the self
the sky in oklahoma grey as moth down
i placed tobacco on your still spirited name
asking a blessing for a frightened human world
soft dresser
your headstone leaning from one age into another….

Working Under Fear of Being Targeted
BY ELSA FIRST
(A found poem taken mainly from the UN OCHA Protection of Civilians Weekly Report, 24-31 December 2008.)
Repairing water piping at open sites
Or carrying water piping on a pickup truck
Greatly increases the risk
For Gaza Coastal Water Utility employees
To be mistakenly identified
As militants transporting rockets
By Israeli Air Force aircraft
With the usual instantaneous merciless
Consequences. Despite increased risks,
Operations of Gaza Coastal Water Utility
Are ongoing. This means they are going on.
Airstrikes in Gaza city
Also east of Jabaliya 27 December
Extensively damaged two water wells,
Rendering a population of 30,000 Palestinians
Without water. This means they had no water
To drink, also not for washing or cooking.
To alleviate the situation, Gaza Coastal Water Utility
Redirected the affected areas
To functioning water wells in other areas,
Thus increasing the burden stress
On functioning wells. Burden stress may be a technical term.
In the event of an Israeli ground operation
This means phalanxes of tanks with Israeli kids inside them,
Freaked out or brave, zoned out or fit to kill,
The Gaza Coastal Water Utility
Lacking spare parts,
Will likely be unable to cope with damages.
--January 1, 2009
ELSA FIRST is a psychotherapist in New York City and was a participant in the conference on Siege and Mental Health: Walls vs. Bridges, sponsored by the Gaza Community Mental Health Program and the W.H.O. for which all internationals were refused entry into Gaza October 26. She can be reached at elsafirst@gmail.com.
Crass Warfare
BY ANGELO JARAMILLO
The wealthy need our help!
Hurry, otherwise certain people might have to work for a living!!!
Here’s how poverty can help:
Let us forget to ask the wealthy to stay in their second and third homes indefinitely until we solve the homeless problem. Let us erect massive gated communities around their security systems and discriminate against their lavish lifestyles. Let us condemn their second and third homes and hand them over to those that can’t afford one…for free.
Let us walk into their banks, their wallets, their glove compartments, and their secret pockets and take only what we need. We don’t want to prevent them from taking an extra vacation this year.
We know they are hurting.
Let us have sympathy for the rich.
We should all be so lucky.
Let us hand-out gourmet to them stuffed with bullets and hangover piss,
While they laugh their blues away sipping oblivion at their favorite café…
Let us walk away evenhandedly as the blaze fades away.
ANGELO JARAMILLO is a stage and film actor and educator from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is the author of The Darker: Tales of a City Different and Psalms of Anarchy, both published by Sunstone Press.
Ode to Capitalism
BY CHELLIS GLENDINNING
Ode to Capitalism with his rosy five-fingered grip
Ode to marketing and omnipotence and bails!
You fill the business pages in black and white print,
retching out diamonds and cellular clones.
You bull into the myelin and into the bones.
The best minds of x generation are squealing for your “i” and your “e.”
Eeeeeee! Ode to the financial fix, the world crank!
So cool, so registered, so credit-card crass,
You are as fecund as goddess carcinoma,
as immaculate as country-club chicken,
carte blanche in the mud floes of ideological time.
Reincarnate you are, Mr. Capital!
No amount of catcalls or match strikes
repels your obsessive propulsion.
You talk dirty in prime skulls, shoot up gelatinous green.
When once and for all you crash into the wall,
will even one bank account be left behind?
CHELLIS GLENDINNING wrote My Name Is Chellis and I'm in Recovery from Western Civilization, Off the Map: An Expedition Deep into Empire and the Global Economy, three other books, and the bilingual folk opera, De Un Lado Al Otro. She lives in Chimayó, New Mexico.
