dancing nowhere
By John Holt
the great american pastime
crashing head on
where the front is obvious
not running down buffalo
not looking for images in ice water
or wandering
after scapegoat seasons
a lot of green thunderbirds
discarded and smashed
along dusty roadsides
dead men gasping
with whitewashed education
draining from torn ears
could not bank on truth
reservations were not honored
around chinookville
sliding along
on fusel oil
and ancient dreams
kicked aside
by forgotten collisions
with rotted pickups
the breeze drinks it all
bone dry
John Holt has been called the Hunter Thompson
of Montana. He is the author of numerous books, including the
gripping novel Hunted,
and Coyote
Nowhere: In Search of America's Lost Frontier. He lives in
Livingston, Montana and can be reached at: jholt@msn.net
Punk
By Barbara LaMorticella
Black boots
steel toes
studs and armbands
The boy in the library
has made himself into a porcupine--
he comes covered in spikes.
If it's whack or be whacked,
everybody wants to be a
whacker!
Oh baby,
Oh 21st century...
He walks by sucking on a binkie
he carries on a chain around his neck.
Barbara LaMorticella is a poet living in Portland, Oregon,
and with Walt Curtis co-hosts a poetry program Monday nights
at 10 PM on KBOO radio, 90.7 FM Portland, where she will interview
CounterPuncher David Vest on February 16. She can be reached

Eviction Year Crisis
By Hammond Guthrie
Undersecretaries hunt for big
game
to rewrite the present for a precedent
incumbently crouching in a blind syntax
designed for embedding innuendoes
Yesterday's white ricin scare
wasn't lethal enough to matter,
though someone would have stood by
to hold your hand in case you died
Timing the security alert is
crucial
for measuring the inherent gravity
of paranoid messages diverting
the wayward attention spans
of potentially right wing voters
After all,
this might just be an eviction year
Hammond Guthrie is the author of AsEverWas:
Memoirs of a Beat Survivor. He is the editor of the great
online journal The
3rd Page. He can be reached at: writenow@spiritone.com

(Un)Intelligence Conundrum
By Mort Subiet
Intelligence that can't be
intelligently evaluated in afterthought
might have been intelligently spliced together in 'aforethought
irretrospectively' speaking of intelligence that can't be found.

Seems Like Old Times
By Stew Albert
The wheels of justice turn
slowly
but they eventually
run over radicals.
One unheralded feature of the
Bush regime
is
its digging up ancient cases against activists
a left over SLA bank robbery
a Grand Jury in Frisco looking at lefties and ancestral bombings
And now opening grandly on
Page One of the Times
the government attempting to nail killers
of Anna Mae Aquash
the murder only happened in 1975
on the Pine Ridge rez
which I visited a year later
hearing endless daily gossip about the case.
Anna May was killed by the
FBI
was pregnant and killed by a lover
was a government agent executed by AIM
was drunk and died from exposure.
Ms Aquash died a thousand different
deaths.
In those days
gossip was the primary work product
of the Pine Ridge rez
and now the Feds are adding
another death to Anna May's endless record.
She was killed by AIM
because she heard one of its leaders
Leonard Peltier
boasting about blasting two FBI agents.
Peltier lives in prison anyway
on top of his private mountain of boundless gossip.
In the Ashcroft era
capital cases against leftists and their like
can be made up
only out of hot air and bullshit.
The Bushies dream
is to not to just rule the known world
but to have their armed detachments
conquering worn out raisins in the sun of history
makings them a province of New Empire.
Stew Albert runs the Yippie
Reading Room. His memoir, Who
the Hell is Stew Albert?, is now available at independent
bookstores or from Red Hen Press. For a personally autographed copy,
please send a check or money order for $22 (includes s&h)
to Stew Albert, Who The Hell. PO Box 13161, Portland OR 97213-0161.
