Much of Iraq is a bandit-ridden
no-man's land. Even in Baghdad it is evident from the hundreds
of bodies arriving at the mortuary that this has become one of
the most violent societies on earth.

Straight-jackets
fashioned far better than at the World Bank or IMF,
but made-in-the-USA all the same,
embrace us: a national dress code.
The gods of discipline gather above,
and like storm clouds stirring the wind
or striding our roofs,
by threat and deprivation, legislate.
Tears streak their faces,
laughter like thunder spills,
while on the ground,
the unprepossessing days dance in circles:
between Bremer's Orders and the broken pipelines,
between the military checkpoints and the insurgent revulsion,
Time, like a clenched fist,
a raised hammer, a cocked trigger
cold as a mirror
eyes us,
and the warmth of a friend's hand forever
is absent.

A world where poetry is king,
No such thing, as misunderstanding.
Not one poet would have more worth,
No one voice singing only one verse,
Not one of us louder or more prized,
Just a harmony of words, crafted by wise
Poetic altos, sopranos and tenors,
United and joined in poetic endeavours.
Metaphorical notes,
Subliminal tones,
Eloquent highs,
Deep mystical lows.
Crescendos of adjectives, nouns
and verbs,
Symphonic creations, composed of words,
All the most important
Documents, deeds and laws
Scripted by poets in metaphors.
Declarations, declared delicately,
Advertising confined to the cemetery.
Pronouncements, pronounced eloquently,
Spin doctors burned as effigies.
Announcements, announced emphatically.
Catch phrases not fitting grammatically.
Eulogies written with poetic love,
Not long lost messages from beings above.
All delivery done with sincerity,
No lies to haunt eternity.
Truth, honour and respect,
For fellow world dwellers yet to be met.
Love, trust and understanding,
Clearly shared in poetic meanderings.
A world where the word, rules as it should,
Could only be birthed by those who could,
Weave words with the knowledge of the unity of us,
Mankind sharing through, a unique opus.

smiles wrap shawls around
Shoulders hold
hands cup water from
alabaster vases glaze
lips into kisses, eyelids
caress sacred ground. Fingers
sift sinuous lines calligraphy
on leaves dry papyri, soak
linen threads, sew rainbow
embroidery. Crimson
patterns crossover
Tell stories about
families whose honor is
tables
gatherings. Hummus
tahini, parsley/buquunis
sprinkles, koubideh
green peppers, skewer squash/kuusa
shish kabob, baba ghannouj, salt
shakers sumac powder
on
tongues turn yellow seasons
taste buds for
Baklava, cardamom syrup on
top! Before
cheeks touch, flow memories stir
honey eyes glisten, tea sips eye-

hugs for children until

Gun shots, then screams
long knives "Your house
never, nevermore!" Grab
children crying, collect
knapsack belongings fumble
keys into
breast pockets, hold
hands, move with
thousands bodies into
Night's fire. Smoke
plumes above
villages, raids terror
run or die. Stumble
on ground, Deir Yassin
soldiers slaughter
dozens children
for blood. On
nape
neck stick prickly
pears, lie still
with hands cover
mouths. Hide
behind animals, tree
trunks bodies swathe
in mud
separate
Think alive where
child, grandmother
husband? Wipe life
on chest never

crawls
behind desert bushes

from starved rocks

Body stands, pick pods
