Profit
BY TINKER DOMINGUEZ
Most college educated citizens vote for the least worst
candidates because “they can win”
That’s how smart they are
In 2004, peace activists said
he didn’t mean it
when Kerry said he would bomb Iraq even more than Bush
Lying is apparently accepted in politics
If you’re identified...
(Democrat, Republican, Baptist, Socialist, Capitalist, etc.)
Your group has it’s own perception.
these philosophies, religions and people who promote them
are polluting unconsciously, forgetfully
Plastic bags swirling around in the sea
poisons poured all over Earth’s body
Wars with poisoned weapons that don’t decompose
Poison forced under her skin, hidden underground
Still, she turns green when the rains come
to dazzle us with her beauty
And her lover, wind
inspires birds to float on his air currents
to impress her
meanwhile humans argue
over what’s cost effective
TINKER DOMINGUEZ can be reached at tink@cruzio.com.
Up in Smoke
BY ROBERT JENKINS
White smoke curling
Unfurling, reaching like four
Arms of the galaxy seeking
Infinity/ scenes, awe-filling me
We’re Getting along swimmingly
Like silver salmon leaping
My Guitar gently weeping
Willows through darkened
Windows peeking at children
Restless sleeping, damp hair
Framing faces/mona lisa smiles
Cutting through thousand mile
Spaces/ touching mind in places
Long forgotten/bare fields picked
Clean except for a few bolls of cotton
Looking like windswept trash
Nightly news of civilization’s crash
Defiling the Koran/voodoo economics
Waving magic wand/ while grown men
Play Halo/black faces drowning/
Iowa corn/Idaho potatoes/sucked up
By tornadoes/mashed and creamed
So goes American dream up in smoke
From sticky green and china white
That traveled over borders on free trade
Trucks/ economy stuck on petrodollars
And Star/bucks, stumbling, crumbling
Drunken bee bumbling line to line
Plantation working 9 to 5 just trying
To make a living/ mind numbed by television
Reality shows bimbos and crooked
Cops, commercial interrupts, vision stops
Abrupt/ eyes refocus/ sitting on couch,
Smoking, wispy white rising, curling
Eddying, swirling spinning, starting over
Going back to beginning….
ROBERT JENKINS lives in San Antonio, Texas. He is a poet, musician and news analyst. You can read and listen to more of his poetry at www.moonmind.com.
The Place
BY IBRAHIM IBN SALMA
The place to worship in:
Is not a distant sanctuary,
Is not made of water, toob*, and stones,
Has no boundaries,
Does not burn to ashes when inflamed.
Lights the way home when it glows,
Is made of compassion and wisdom,
Its doors swing with visitors like dancers,
Its carpets kowtow to the broom,
It is close to the heart.
This place
Is your soul.
*Toob = Natural adobe
IBRAHIM IBN SALMA lives in Santa Barbara, Calif. and can be reached at cidar4@yahoo.com.
A Quaker Meditation
By KIMBERLY WILLSON
“We are on each other’s hands
who care. Both of our world’s unhanded us. Lie stark,”
- -John Berryman
Friend,
Lay thee down
in pennsylvania,
a field of clover.
For we have played
hide and seek
too long.
The day is glowing
with a primordial sunset.
Relapses of faith
as healing crises
without boundaries.
For god holds
all of us in the light.
KIMBERLY WILLSON is currently the poetry editor for CounterPunch and a poetry judge for the Willa Awards (Women Writing the West). She can be reached at willsons53@gmail.com.
