Years ago I caught a fish
In some frigid mountain stream
The cut throat bass
Well named indeed
Just flipped and flapped
A fat kite caught by wind
My joy his shock collided
His gills struggled
My heart raced
Defeat success death dinner
I thought I saw sadness
In his dying eyes
I stared as if
I could share a feeling
Spasms seized his jaw
I removed the hook
Placed his slimy body
Gripped with fatigue
Gasping like my grandfather
After his infarct
Into the drab bucket
His shallow metal coffin
I swore I would
Not become sentimental
When I cooked him

I Come From There

I come from there and I have memories 
Born as mortals are, I have a mother 
And a house with many windows, 
I have brothers, friends, 
And a prison cell with a cold window. 
Mine is the wave, snatched by sea-gulls, 
I have my own view, 
And an extra blade of grass. 
Mine is the moon at the far edge of the words, 
And the bounty of birds, 
And the immortal olive tree. 
I walked this land before the swords 
Turned its living body into a laden table. 

I come from there. I render the sky unto her mother 
When the sky weeps for her mother. 
And I weep to make myself known 
To a returning cloud.

MAHMOUD DARWISH (1942-2008) was considered to be the most important contemporary Arab poet working today. He was born in 1942 in  the village of Barweh in the Galilee, which was razed to the ground by the Israelis in 1948. As a result of his political activism he faced house arrest and imprisonment. Darwish was the editor of Ittihad newspaper before leaving in 1971 to study for a year in the USSR. Then he went to Egypt where he worked in Cairo for Al-Ahram newspaper and in Beirut, Lebanon as an editor of the journal Palestinian Issues. He was also the director of the Palestinian Research Center. Darwish was a member of the Executive Committee of the PLO and lived in exile between Beirut and Paris until his return in 1996 to Palestine.His poems are known throughout the Arab world, and several of them have been put to music. His poetry has gained great sophistication over the years, and has enjoyed international fame for a long time. He has published around 30 poetry and prose collections, which have been translated into 35 languages. He is the editor in chief and founder of the prestigious literary review Al Karmel, which has resumed publication in January 1997 out of the Sakakini Centre offices. He published in 1998 the poetry collection: Sareer el Ghariba (Bed of the Stranger), his first collection of love poems. In 2000 he published Jidariyya (Mural) a book consisting of one poem about his near death experience in 1997. In 1997 a documentary was produced about him by French TV directed by noted French-Israeli director Simone Bitton.

An Exchange of Dead Souls at the Saint George Social Club

Things were so dull at my corner stool –
roasted potatoes and onions on a grille,
nobody at the shuffleboard table,
nobody at the Joker Poker machine.
Herman Chichikov, the Gentry bartender,
kept eyes peeled on a fly catcher
and his empty Oakland Raider tip cup.
Herman lost all hope of identifying with me,
and only the shadowy “regular,”
Mr. Tony Sobakevich, sat three stools down,
reading Anna Karenina (for the past seven
months) would have anything to do with me.

All my good friends were
hopeless drunkards and broke,
and only Herman could I depend upon to buy
me a respectable glass of beer.
He tilted a tall glass at sixty degrees;
a perfect head floated like a cloud on Lake Baikal.
I saw nothing special in Herman,
except he was named for an Alaskan Saint.

What’s that you said, Tony?
Alexander Solzhenitsyn is dead?

I felt quite disgusted with Tony Sobakevich
who had not turned a page of Tolstoy’s classic
since Obama lost the Pennsylvania primary.
How could a bar fly so absorbed in
Count Vronsky’s fictitious attempts to get into
Anna Karenina’s pants know anything about
the life of Alexander Solzhenitsyn?
(the fucker)

But really, I thought  – Was it theologically
possible that either Iosif Djugashvili or
John McEnroe took possession of Tony’s soul?
(Ah, if only things were that cut and dry?)
As a kid in 1974, I joined the Komsomol,
and I was crazy about Solzhenitsyn,
and an affectionate hippie girl who opened
my frockcoat and polished my Red October
while Serfing U.S.A. played on my
442 Olds’ 8-track cassette.

“It’s Surfing U.S.A., asshole ” shouted
Tony.

Ignorant, self-indulgent, bankrupt, no house,
failed kids – Tony Sobakevich slapped the bar
like Khrushchev, with his Birkenstock sandal.

Yes, Tony, yes, stay cool.
I’ll go along with you on the syntax,
0A but never, let me say NEVER AGAIN
try to take advantage of my semi-sobriety
2-hours before last call, and 5- hours after
Wall Street announced Dead Souls' values
dropped, and I already had one-too-many
deals go down the Donskoi piss drain
(I really wanted to slam Tony’s book shut,
spit on it, and exile it to the G.W. Bush Library).

Tony had risen.  Sized up Herman’s tip cup.
Said, “I have a wake to attend.”

“Hmm..., I wonder how much kopeks a registered
dead dissident soul fetches?”  speculated Herman
as he turned out the club lights.
