September 6, 2003   Baghdad After the War: the Matinee By JULIA STEIN US troops nearby fired shots at looters near the Al Rashid Theater as a couple hundred walking past the looters and through the lobby with broken glass, black walls and wires dangling from the ceiling to a lightless stage with heavy curtains, covered with hundreds of yards of exposed film, a stage with a broken urns, spindly scaffolding. Ten actors emerge from years of the underground plays in home; now two dancers hang from the scaffolding, a lone guitarist plays, a woman cradles the head of a crouching man, giving him water; at play's end the audience as one in a standing ovation with people crying at a cast party in the dark stage with a weeping reunion after the war of Baghdad's artists who sobbed and embraced. Thousands have been wounded in Bush war by bombs that tear up bodies worse than bullets. Are Americans willing to sacrifice their children's arms and legs to an empty image of superficial pretense? Dubya likes costumes a Village Person who dresses up like a cowboy or Top Gun or an ordinary working stiff on Labor Day figuring that looking marvelous counts more than words and deeds. But by election time the cruel costs of empire on a bloody battlefield may have him campaigning in a wheel chair feeling our pain and mutilation looking savaged because video tricks make legs disappear.
