The Elect
by GREG KEELER
Food goes into them smoothly. They breed in clean
dark rooms. Their minds settle easily in their skulls,
and their skulls rest squarely on their shoulders. Between
the heaven of self and the hell of other, lust dulls
their thinking to a blunt edge, good for genocide
and not much else. Have you seen them strut
the horizon, trying to mock that god who died
in their defense? Transparent, they are but
shells until money gives them substance. Perhaps
you have heard their slogans, like a machine
hammering at the edge of your sleep. Perhaps
you have smelled their exhaust or seen
their bloody footprints in the corridors
of their churches, tracked in from foreign wars.
Greg Keeler is the author of several collections of poems, including American Falls, Epiphany at Goofy’s Gas, and A Mirror to the Safe, as well as the memoir Trash Fish: A Life. Keeler has written Montana "operas," and other musicals, recorded tapes and CDs, and is an avid painter and mushroom hunter. He teaches English at Montana State University in Bozeman. To learn more about Greg, visit his website: www.troutball.com.
A Father’s Dream in Time of War
By EDWARD BEATTY
The soldier possessing his son’s face becomes a child
leading cattle across a pasture. He surrenders his shape
as he passes through a gate to the lane. When his wife
sighs a fiber of light writhes out of the father’s pillow,
penetrates his neck, squirms down his spine, divides
at his thighs. A shock tingles each leg, descends until
feet glow, like two hearts under a sheet of white glass.
Soles flame, heels and toes are hot coals. Again he is
a boy leaning over the mow’s edge after a baling hook
grazed his head, watching boots drip red. Then a man
of mud, waiting to feel what limbs the land mine left.
She moans and the curtains open. A full moon makes
the bedroom into a garden, pours its light over a rotted
vine, anoints its head as it sinks into the soil. He sees
a toppled scarecrow arrayed in frost become his wife
in her wedding gown kneeling in the debris and weeds.
She picks the last pumpkin. Will carve an orange face,
bake a pie, for their son. Home from the war and whole.
Edward Beatty lives in rural northern Illinois. This poem was previously published in Rhino, 2006. He can be reached at: ebeatty@grics.net
Hamlet’s Trojan Horse
By KEMMER ANDERSON
In the ominous horse Prince Hamlet waits
With a whetstoned tongue sharpened by the Ghost,
Whose word breaks the symmetry of the Host
In a communion that keeps ancient hates
Alive with the promise to weave the fates
Of Denmark and Troy into a compost
Made of body, blood, bone sealed by the boast
Of Greek warriors when revenge intoxicates
The soul with poison that infects the ear
With lies through the woof and warp of the mind
Looming on evil. From the rage of Cain
To the scenes on Achilles’ shield, Shakespeare
Strikes on the beaten anvil of mankind
A martial myth shaped in the form of pain.
Kemmer Anderson teaches in English in Chattanooga, TN. He continues to present essays on John Milton’s influence on Thomas Jefferson under the hopeful title, Milton at Monticello. He has published various chapbooks – Sparrows and Soldiers (2009). He may be reached at kanderso@mccallie.org
Editorial Note: To submit to Poets’ Basement, send an e-mail to CounterPunch’s new poetry editor, Marc Beaudin at counterpunchpoetry@gmail.com with your name, the titles being submitted, and your website url or e-mail address (if you’d like this to appear with your work). Please submit your poetry by Tuesday in order to be considered for the CounterPunch Weekend Edition of the Poets’ Basement. The Weekend Edition will now run on Fridays instead of Saturdays.
