But we must flip channels to hold our own life fast, its loud cost of doing business. Frank B. Ford lives in Florida.   Staying the Corpse By CHARLES ORLOSKI My Uncle Bill lived in the street, off and on, but more on than off. Smoked stray butts -- filtered Kents were "mild," his favorite brand. Bill watered down at a local V.F.W., slept beneath the new town bridge, didn't worry much about tomorrow. (Man, I wish I had his secret.) Oneday, a Philadelphia doctor diagnosed Bill with throat cancer. Without surgery, they predicted less than six-agonizing months of life. Bill's chin trembled at the news. The doctor allowed me to come face-to-face with the killer tumor -- like red-raw burning, pulsating coal. Behind me, interns and research assistants stood in line to view the spectacular agent of death. Casually, Bill looked around the room, shoulders shrugged, and opted for surgery. "What can I do?" he asked. He never ate another morsel of food. In his new social position (state?), inside a nursing home, he bowled a few games and played Bingo with fellow dying community. His smile was intolerable to behold. He finally died almost a year to the post-surgery assigned date. At Saint Mary's, Bill used to sing "Our Father" in Church Slavonic. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the foothills of the Endless Mountains, alongside his immigrant father, who they say, "gave him everything." I suppose a marker would be peculiar to Bill -- He hadn't many friends, just critics and a patient old bartender. At moment's like this, days of darkness of war, abyss of "staying or pulling out," I comfort myself thinking my Uncle Bill wouldn't know how to deal with a tombstone, and being recognized by someone important passing by.
